The history of the villa
a legacy of style
Built in the early twentieth century, it was originally the elegant home of the Miliani family, a family of entrepreneurs and industrialists in the paper industry. The complex has been redeveloped into a hotel that has retained its refined style, imposing grandeur and elegant symmetry, complemented by frames in relief and floral elements, with iconography typical of the early decades of the last century.
This urban regeneration construction project was integrated within the city. While preserving its historical memory, it features all the hallmarks of modernity, innovation and attention to the environment, with a focus on green spaces and environmental and energy sustainability.
The project combines the allure of the twentieth century with modern sustainability.
A family history
Fabriano was the heart of paper production in Europe and remains one of its main production centres today. It is especially notable for the quantity and quality of its products, its manufacturing techniques (the thirteenth-century paper masters' techniques were particularly innovative) and the skill of its workers. Over the centuries, paper has been a driver of economic wealth, mobility and social prestige here, as well as a form of artistic promotion and production.
One of the innovative techniques used was that of watermarks. The chiaro-scuro watermarks were an important testament to the perfection achieved by Fabriano paper mills in this sector, in particular for the production of paper currency.
Pietro Miliani
Let's go all the way back to the second half of the eighteenth century and remember the forefather, Pietro Miliani. Born in 1744 in Fabriano, he was a brilliant paper technician who later became an entrepreneur with great organisational skills and a modern, innovative and forward-looking vision. Together with Antonio Vallemani, a nobleman from Fabriano, he succeeded in bringing together the various paper mills and old factories of Fabriano under a single "brand" in 1782, giving rise to Cartiera Miliani - the Miliani paper factory.
Giuseppe Miliani
Giuseppe Miliani, his grandson, led Le Cartiere Miliani to significant industrial expansion in the second half of the nineteenth century, both in terms of production, by taking over the Serafini and Campioni paper mills, and in terms of the number of people employed in the factory.
Giambattista Miliani
Giuseppe's son, Giambattista Miliani (1856–1937), was the last great representative of the family. He transformed the company into a leading industrial enterprise specialising in the production of paper currencies. In addition to this, he held important public and social positions, serving as Minister of Agriculture during the Great War and Senator of the Kingdom, and was mayor and then podestà of Fabriano for several terms.
